Ghana striker Jordan Ayew has maintained an optimistic outlook despite Leicester City’s 2-1 defeat to Preston North End in the English Championship on Saturday.

The Foxes, tipped as strong promotion contenders, suffered their first league defeat of the season in just their second game, sparking questions about their readiness for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Ayew, who is still searching for his first goal of the campaign, admitted the result was disappointing but stressed the team remains firmly focused on their long-term target.

“After a defeat, nobody likes to lose, so there’s always going to be a bit of critiques. It’s all part of the game and we’ll take it. Our main goal is still the same,” the veteran forward said.

“We need to make sure we’ll be ready for the next games. There’s a game coming next week against Charlton and we need to start picking up points, to give us confidence and bring the smiles back onto everyone’s faces.”

At Deepdale, Alfie Devine opened the scoring for Preston, but Leicester’s young talent Jeremy Monga struck to level the game. However, a late finish from Milutin Osmajic sealed victory for the hosts.

Ayew has featured in all two Championship matches so far and was also involved in the Carabao Cup exit to Huddersfield on penalties. He is expected to play a key role as Leicester travel to face Charlton Athletic next weekend.
