Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew has recounted the moment of winning the FIFA World Cup at U-20 level in 2009, and has labelled it as the best ever moment in his career.
The Black Satellites achieved the double in the said year, having won the African Youth Championship earlier in Rwanda after beating Cameroon in the final- thanks to a brace from Ransford Osei.
Very young Andre Ayew then, surged on heading to the World Cup in Egypt and played an instrumental leadership role as the captain to propel the team to historic glory.
He stepped up to take his kick during the shootouts to edge Ghana on, to win 4-3 on penalties after a marathon of shootouts- making Ghana the first ever African nation to have their hands gripped on the title.
Recalling back that memory, the Nottingham Forest attacker has narrated how they (players) motivated themselves heading into the game just to make history and added it is still the best moment in his entire football career.
"Ghana has a special history with Brazil when it comes to youth football. Even before my time, meetings between the two teams were always tense. To be honest, we didn't want to play the Seleçao in an earlier round as they were the best team in the tournament."
"In the final, it was a whole other story. We were aware that we could make history and didn’t want to let the chance pass us by. We told ourselves that there were only 90 or 120 minutes separating us from a world title."
"It remains the best moment of my career. It’s the title that’s given us the most joy, the most honour and the most pride."
Ayew, 33, from then also established himself at the senior national team the Black Stars with over 100 appearances and 24 goals.
He's played at three senior FIFA World Cups from then henceforth; 2010 in South Africa, Brazil 2014 and the 2022 edition in Qatar.
