Chris Hughton, the coach of the Black Stars, has called on his team to improve their performance in front of goal following their lack of efficiency during their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Angola in Kumasi on Thursday.
Despite dominating the game throughout the 90 minutes, the Black Stars could only convert one of their 21 goal attempts. They managed to secure a crucial victory against the Palancas Negras thanks to Antoine Semenyo's stoppage-time goal, which boosted their chances of qualifying for the tournament in Ivory Coast next year.
However, Hughton believes that his players can do better in the final third by capitalizing on the chances created and scoring more goals.
"We had 11 chances, so that's the first positive. If you told me we played for 96 minutes and had only two or three chances, then that's worrying. But the fact that we had chances means that we will put some of them away in the next game or the game after. The only thing we learned is that we need to be a little more clinical when we have opportunities," Hughton said after the game.
Ghana will play their next fixture against the same opponents in Luanda on Monday. With seven points, the team will secure a spot in the AFCON if they record another victory.
