Former Ghanaian international footballer, Dan Quaye, has called upon the technical team of the Black Stars to consider recruiting goalkeepers from the Ghana Premier League into the national squad.
Quaye highlighted perceived weaknesses within the Black Stars' goalkeeping department, emphasizing the necessity for a fresh approach to address the issue.
During an interview with Connect 97.1FM, Quaye pointed out the impressive performances of certain local goalkeepers, such as Frederick Asare from Asante Kotoko and Felix Kyei from Medeama SC, in the Ghana Premier League. He suggested that these talented individuals deserve an opportunity to represent the national team.
"Our goalkeepers keep committing errors in games," Quaye remarked, expressing his concern. "If you look at the local league, we have some good goalkeepers who are performing very well."
Quaye's remarks coincide with ongoing discussions surrounding the selection criteria for goalkeepers in the national team, particularly in light of previous costly errors. The Black Stars have recently rotated between Joseph Wollacott, Richard Ofori, and Lawrence Ati Zigi in the goalkeeper position.
As Ghana prepares for upcoming matches against Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June, Quaye's advocacy for the inclusion of local talent in the Black Stars squad adds to the ongoing debate regarding the team's composition and performance.
