Ghana coach Otto Addo has joined the voices against the destruction caused by galamsey to the country’s water bodies and described it as a serious problem.
In the forthcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers, he stressed that his team's current priority is winning the crucial doubleheader against Sudan.
The government has been urged to stop mining operations in forest and water regions by concerned citizens who have been demonstrating in Accra for the past few weeks. Now on its second day, one such demonstration is being organized by a group of concerned individuals.
During his announcement of the Black Stars squad for the upcoming matches, Addo was asked about the galamsey issue.
He stated, “You know, there are a lot of things that have also distracted me; maybe I've questioned myself as well, asking what I could have done better.
“If, let's say, I have an accident, there's nothing I can do about it.
“But, you know, there are other distractions within the team, and for us, to be honest, it's about focusing on Sudan and nothing else. After we win, then we can talk about every other topic.”
Ghana is set to face Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, before traveling to Libya for the second leg at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benina on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Otto Addo's side aim to secure one of the top two spots in Group F to qualify for the AFCON tournament, scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026 in Morocco.
