Nigerian midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has extended his sympathies to Ghana for their disappointing exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In an interview with Joel Bortey, Iwobi, who plays for Fulham, expressed sadness at the manner in which Ghana bowed out of the tournament.
He emphasized the rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana but also highlighted his respect for Ghanaian players, many of whom are his friends.
“Of course there’s a lot of rivalry between us two. There are a lot of people that I respect. I have a lot of friends outside the team that are Ghanaians,” the AFCON runner-up told Joel Bortey in an interview.
“It’s almost like you want them to do well so you can play against them and prove a point in the competition but it’s a shame because the way they exited with the sort of players they have was a bit sad to see.”
Ghana's premature elimination from AFCON 2023 came after they failed to secure a victory in any of their three group-stage matches.
Despite finishing third in Group B with two points, their hopes of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams were dashed when Cameroon defeated The Gambia, sealing Ghana's fate in the tournament.
