Former Asante Kotoko captain Eric Donkor has commended the club’s decision to re-sign striker Kwame Opoku, expressing optimism about the player’s impact.

The 27-year-old forward has rejoined the Porcupine Warriors on a two-and-a-half-year deal, marking his second stint with the Ghanaian giants after an underwhelming three-season spell in Algeria and Morocco.

Speaking to Pan-Africa Football, Donkor highlighted Opoku’s goal-scoring abilities and his prior contributions to the club.

“I have been following the Ghana Premier League, and I must attest to the fact that goal-scoring has been a challenge, not just for Kotoko but for many clubs," Donkor said. "Yes, Kwame Opoku has played for the club before, and everyone knows about his goal-scoring prowess. His return to Asante Kotoko is good for the club."

While acknowledging Opoku’s struggles in North Africa, Donkor defended the striker’s quality.
“He didn’t perform in Algeria and Morocco, but I know what he did for Asante Kotoko before leaving Ghana. Clubs demand goals from strikers or attackers and rarely have the patience of European clubs. I believe people will focus on his qualities, not his past challenges.”

Opoku initially joined USM Alger in 2021 after netting six goals in 16 Ghana Premier League games. However, he struggled for consistent game time before moving to Morocco's Olympique Khouribga, where a knee injury and the team’s relegation compounded his woes.

Returning to Kotoko, Opoku is expected to strengthen a faltering frontline that has struggled to find goals in the ongoing 2024/25 season.

His return coincides with a high-stakes fixture as Asante Kotoko hosts arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in a Week 13 clash at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, December 15.
