Former Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has expressed disappointment over his inability to personally say goodbye to the club’s supporters following his decision to step down.
The Porcupine Warriors boss resigned after Kotoko’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup at the Round of 16 stage, where they were beaten by Aduana FC on Sunday.
Reflecting on his departure in an interview with Asempa FM, Zito spoke emotionally about his time at the club and the bond he shared with the supporters.
“I am a legend of the club, and if an issue arises, you need to remain calm and talk things out. I have resigned, and that is it. I would have wished to say goodbye to the fans for their support. I have been on the job for barely a year, and I won four trophies,” he said.
Zito took charge in July last year and quickly made an impact, guiding the club to MTN FA Cup glory in the 2024/25 season and securing four trophies during his relatively short spell in charge.
His resignation came at a challenging period for the club, with Kotoko managing only one victory in their last five Ghana Premier League matches. The inconsistent run has left the team in fifth place on the table, eight points adrift of leaders Medeama SC.
Following his departure, first assistant coach Prince Owusu has been appointed interim head coach. He will be supported by Mohammed Hamza Obeng, who currently leads the club’s junior team, as Kotoko look to steady the ship.
Kotoko will now turn their attention to their Week 22 league fixture against rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium. The Porcupine Warriors will be hoping to bounce back strongly, regain momentum, and continue building on the foundation Zito helped establish during his time at the club.
