Chairman of the National Sports Authority, Peter Ofori Twumasi hasn't ruled out possibilities of naming one of their stadia after Brazil legend, Pele who passed on last week.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, as he is affectionately referred to, was painfully announced dead on December 29, 2022 after a long battle against cancer.
His death really sparked lots of tributes worldwide, not only amongst football faithfuls but was a general one with the majority bidding farewell to him and the family and was buried at the world's tallest cemetery- Memorial Necrópole Ecuménica last Wednesday in Santos, Brazil.
Pele, is regarded by many as the greatest footballer ever, having won three World Cups in his career (1958, 1962 & 1970). He was also adjudged player of the century by FIFA.
With this, FIFA President Gianni stated they will asked all member nations to name one of their stadia after Pele for his great contribution to the game, with Cape Verde becoming the first country to do that.
In an interview, Peter Ofori Twumasi said they are also willing to follow suit but will have to consult some stakeholders especially looking at the number of unnamed facilities in the country at the momentum. He said;
"The call by Infantino for nations to name a stadium in recognition of the football king, Pelé, is something many nations always do to honour their hero."
“For me, it is a good motivation for young players who aspire to reach the pinnacle of football and also serves as a magnet to unite people around the world."
“There are procedures to be followed in the renaming of the stadium and as we did with the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, and we are willing to engage appropriate stakeholders to make this happen, especially given the vast number of unnamed new sporting facilities in the country,” he told GNA.
